Cucaracha Coach

Let me begin by saying that Taco trucks kick ass, here is some context:

San Francisco is a great place to eat, to hang out and to kick around in on any random sunny afternoon. The summers tend to be foggy, which makes you want to hole up in side a bit, but the winters are clear and great.

So Becky and I wanted to get out of the house today and motor around the city. We just ran random errands - returned some stuff, etc. Around two we started getting a bit hungry for lunch, but we were in the South of Market area under a freeway and there wasn't much in the way of grubbin. Enter the taco truck... Now, I am familiar with the bullshit lunch trucks of the rest of the country - Sandwiches wrapped in saran wrap... old hot dogs on the grill... freeze dried burgers, but we were hungry and I heard the were alright, plus I love me some burritos, so why not try a simple taco.

Whenever I try a new mexican establishment, my first bet is on the chicken... if the chicken is alright, you can start diving into the scarier meats, such as pork or beef with a bit less fear. So, "one super taco with chicken please". Becky, on the other hand, cuts to te chase: "Regular asada taco".

He yells something to his friend in the back. Then I look back there - fresh tomatos, onion, and a pretty good sized crowd outside eating some good looking food. I lean on the truck, excited for my taste of real truck food. 2 bucks a taco is a bit on the pricey side, but still - it is only two bucks, and a good gamble.

"Hey you - do you want hot sauce?" Fuck yeah I want some hot sauce. 30 seconds later a steaming paper plate with two tacos teetering on collapse is pushed out by a hand. Napikins, plastic forks.

Lets check out these tacos. On the super: FRESH slices of avocado, pinto beans, tomato, garlic, onion, crazy good hot sauce, marinated chicken (grilled) on two fresh soft corn tortillas. On the regular: sour cream, salsa, hot sauce and shredded steak. We stroll back to becky's little green civic of a car, lean on the trunk and dig in with two forks. Both of us try a couple of times in vain to fold the taco, lift it up and just take one whole taco bite, but the food laughs at us and slumps back onto the plate. Tease.

Regardless, the sun is reflecting off the hood of the car, we are both leaning over our steamy meal... it is cool out but not cold outside. All is right with the world, and those tacos should have cost twenty bucks.

Those trucks scare me, but i've never had anything from them, it's just the thought.

dude, those things are great...i have one at the end of my block and one stops by my office every day at 11. i don't really trust the meat persay, but they make the greatest breakfast burrito, sin carne....that i've ever had.

some of the great food in the city...you'll find on a roach coach. i love our culture.
