On January 23rd 2006, for the first time in about 70 years, Canadians elected a conservative (not to be confussed with a PC) as Prime Minister. Most of you reading this dont give a damn. But for those isolated few that do here is my political insight.

Ask a conservative and they would say its about time. Ask a liberal and they will say watch the conservatives fail. Ask a new democrat and they will say shit we lost again! Ask the BQ and they will say, eff it, we'll be gone soon anyways.

All jokes aside, what has happend to my country is nothing short of a refreshment. A conservative minority government is just what this country needs. For 12 years liberals have made promises they couldnt keep, they have started programs that couldnt stabilize, and they have stolen money from Canadians. Today is the end.

Those who voted liberal were no doubt worried about a Conservative agenda being the end of their Canada. Allow me to put those worries aside by giving a lesson in what has happend over the past few years while Liberal Paul Martin has been at the helm. Paul Martin, in his practice was a fiscal conservative and a social democrat. He was this for two reasons. One, he couldnt afford to piss away money on silly programs because the conservative loyal opposition would tear him a new one, Two, he had to somehow please the NDP enough to have an ally and subsiquent majority vote in the house.

It wont be a shock then when we witness the same sort of consept with Stephen Harper's Conservatives. For the first year, we will see some changes - we will see a reduction in the GST, we will see strengthening of policy rules, a foreign policy (our first ever), Continued attention and reform to previous liberal agenda items. One thing we wont see however is SOCIAL CONSERVATISM! A Conservative minority government does not have the resources to power through a womans right to choose, gay rights, or any other KEY social issues. The truth is: they dont want to! This is what will make a Conservative government refreshing. They have the power only to make things run smoother, with more transparency, and cheaper.

The conservative government will have to have a "conservative" agenda to stay alive. They cannot afford to destroy Canada because they will destroy their election chances for another 12 years...
