Loren's Coconut Sized Balls

Loren posted a youtube video of himself getting "acro" trained this weekend over a lake doing paragliding. And by "acro", I mean I am getting dizzy sitting here watching him lose altitude on youtube. Check it out (especially the "full stalls" about half way through)

Animation Show of Shows

The animation festival called the "Animation Show of Shows" is going around - though I looked it up an have no idea if/when it is going to be anywhere else. I thought some of you might be interested in seeing it. There are a bunch of alternative medium pieces in it, including "My Love" by a russian director named Alexander Petrov. A few years back he did an imax film that was all oil paint on glass. It was brilliant and so is this one.

Also, there is a hilarious short from pixar ("Lifted") and a great pirate short called SHIPWRECKED by Frodo Kuipiers. It was done in an amazing rough and wierd ink drawing style that I am still not sure about, but laughed at the whole time.

There is also some great representation from the National Film Board of Canada, and others.

New old show: Rescue Me

Has anyone seen this show? We watched season one and were pretty impressed. Dennis Leary is as sarcastic as ever, and there is plenty of naked-for-cable ass cheeks for the ladies. Not to mention fire and violence for the guys!

Honestly though, it is a pretty good show. If you haven't seen it and you have netflix, grab disk one and see if it grabs back. Oh, but not before you check out the Wire.

What's going on in your hood?

Election is coming up. I need to figure out what I am voting on and what I am not. We have ballot measures here in california, so the masses get to decide on issues they know nothing about. Not only that, but they are written like an SAT test - in the most confusing way possible as to disguise what they are actually for or against.

For instance, how should I vote on the "Government Acquisition, Regulation of private property initiative constitutional amendment". I know I don't want them to take my land! oh wait, I rent.

On the other hand, how could I say no to the "$10 416 000 000 bond issue that will provide needed funding to relieve public school overcrowding and to repair older schools"? Wait, I don't have kids.

Do they have a "Make housing more affordable to twenty somethings bond act of 2006?", or the "Anti High Fructose Corn Syrup in all the shit we eat" proposed constitutional amendment?

Whats going on in your states?

Two shows worth seeing

It is touring season and a lot of bands worth seeing are on the road. We just got tickets to see sparta in a month, and went to a couple of shows in the past month.

The Black Angels

On the album it literally sounds like Jim Morrison meets Nick Cave. I had no idea what to expect for the show, and it was at the "Independant" in SF. The first song was an acoustic with a guest guitarist. Then they went into their set with songs from the album (it was their first full length from what I understand). I was pretty amazed at the stage presence of the entire band. I don't think I saw the singer's eyes for the whole shot. Every member of the band traded off instruments at some point. The girl drummer rolled onto bass while their incredibly gifted indie guitarist (yeah, he rocked a 12 string at one point) went onto the drums and just kicked ass. There were a few songs that were a bit heavy on the keyboards... and they had some songs that were rough, but it was a great show, and if you see them in your town you should go.

To give you a bit of flavor, becky found out the reason for their name:

Illness, insanity and death are the black angels that kept watch over my cradle and accompanied me all my life. -Edvard Munch

Lucero

Another band you should try to go see if you can. Kurt, if you read this you should go. I dig their recorded stuff somewhat (it is a bit on the country side for me) but live is a whole different story. Alot more intense and interesting. The style of music is perfect for a bar with a whiskey in your hand. The new album (which I picked up right after the show) sounds a lot like bruce springsteen... mostly because of the piano accompaniment. The show sort of "devolved" as the band got more and more drunk - which both made it more fund, and made us want to leave and get a slice of pizza.

Two good shows, if you are in the mood.

Laughing at Violence

We went and saw "The Departed" last night, which was a good movie.

Loren was amazed at how many laughs the scenes of incredible violence got. At first, I didn't really notice, but after thinking about it last night he was right. Why is that? Did resevoir dogs ruin us all forever?

There were many scenes of legitimate humor in the movie: Marky Walberg was a hilarious cop who in most of the movie looks like his head might explode. All the guys play their favorite boston "southie" guys - Damon, Di Caprio.

Jack Nicholson has a great performance as he transforms from a relatively unstable bad guy to an actual madman - and he does it slowly enough to let you see the transition. A couple of scenes remind me of the shining. The movie was too long though, but aren't all movies that way now? I think it was about 2:30, but I didn't notice.

Anyways, go check it out. I don't know what else to say.

instant message scandal

I know it's a little late for this but I heard a good one today.
" I found out that when democrats read a book they will use a book mark but republicans prefer to bend over the page" :)
I feel sick too Jer. But it's the Flu up hear. I woke up on Thanksgiving morning and ran to the washroom. It was 2 exits, no waiting. (Sorry is that too graphic?)

I watched Dirty Love with Jenny Mcarthy (she's purdy!) anyway it was moderately funny but this scene made me pee. She hooks up with a strange guy at a bar. Back at his place she takes some E and is a little freaked out. He asks if she is into sexual experimentation as he removes a wraped item from the frig. "give me 5 minutes" he says as he goes into the bed room.

Lost

3.01 A Tale Of Two Cities
Interesting.... tons of question and a few answers. Maybe???

Nice intro. Fleshes things out much more.

Odd punchline to the show with Julie and Ben. I didn't consider her "breakthrough" enough to warrent that reaction. She didn't do anything to Jack.

Apparently the book everyone was reading was Carrie by Stephen King. What the hell could that have to do with anything?
